The Master Guide to Wood Veneer Backers & Substrates

At Oakwood Veneer, we specialize in sourcing and manufacturing more than 300 domestic, exotic, and burl flexible wood veneer sheets in our factory. Choosing the right backing option is just as critical as selecting your wood species. All standard veneer faces are shipped raw and unfinished, giving your shop complete control over the final custom staining and topcoat process. We can apply any backer to almost any veneer species to meet your blueprints—if you don't see the exact combination you need online, call our team for specialized custom requests.

22-Mil Bubble-Free Veneer™ (BFV) Backer

Field-tested for over 15 years, our heavy-duty, balance-matched 22-mil BFV is the industry standard for flat architectural layouts. It acts as a total moisture barrier and absorbs minor underlying substrate imperfections, completely eliminating the risk of veneer checking over large flat runs. It provides maximum stability with no black line (NBL).

The Anatomy of Bubble-Free Veneer:
Think of its construction like plywood that is engineered to be thin and flexible. Each BFV sheet features a highly stable 5-layer composition:

  • 1st Layer: Premium Select Wood Veneer Face
  • 2nd Layer: Melamine / Resin Acrylic Bonding Matrix
  • 3rd Layer: Center Core Paper Stabilizer
  • 4th Layer: Melamine / Resin Acrylic Vapor Barrier
  • 5th Layer: Bottom Balancing Paper Backer

These layers create a permanent vapor barrier so stains and topcoats cannot react with underlying shop adhesives. Please note: Due to the complex nature of deep grain wood expansion, contact cement is not suggested as an adhesive requirement for standard BFV applications.

10-Mil Paper Backed Sheet Veneer

The original industry classic. This economical option features a lightweight, single 10-mil paper backing that delivers beautiful, cost-effective results. Because it offers maximum flexibility, 10-mil paper is the ideal choice for general craftsmanship, wrapping curved architectural millwork, tight radiuses, and custom accent profiles.

Wood-on-Wood Veneer (2-Ply / W.O.W.)

Engineered for superior durability and hiding characteristics, our 2-ply Wood-on-Wood (W.O.W.) veneer features flexibility that rivals standard paper-backed sheets. Built with a premium wood veneer face, a stable paperback layer in the middle, and a flexible wood backer, it completely covers minor substrate flaws while maintaining excellent cross-grain stability.

Phenolic Backed Laminate Sheet Veneer

Often referred to in the industry as Dura-bull, Rhino back, or Plastiback, our phenolic backed veneer fuses elite wood faces with a heavy-duty, resin-saturated paper backing. This is the ultimate commercial-grade choice when maximum structural insurance, impact resistance, and moisture stability are required. It is ideal for use over less-than-perfect core substrates and easily takes the place of standard high-pressure laminates (HPL).

3M™ Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) Backer

For fast on-site refacing, modifications, or smaller accents, specialized pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backers are available. This high-strength, permanent "peel and stick" backing allows for rapid installation without the need for traditional vacuum presses or heavy shop clamping equipment.

Understanding Total Finished Thicknesses

Important Technical Note: The terms "10-mil" and "22-mil" refer strictly to the thickness of the backing materials, not the total finished sheet. Total thickness varies slightly by species profile. Standard finished averages measure:

  • 22-Mil BFV Total Sheet Thickness: .026" to .029" (~1/35")
  • 10-Mil Paper Total Sheet Thickness: .022" to .025" (~1/40")
  • 3M™ PSA Total Sheet Thickness: .023" to .026" (~1/40")
