Getting rid of veneer backing line at corners?
Oct 28th 2015
Question:
I am taking on my first veneering project. Its a fairly large, modern table and going well with one exception, which I hope to remedy quickly. It has to do with the paperback on the veneer showing as I meet 2 sheets at a 90 degree edge, rounding the corner 1/16 or so. I am using walnut. My design is such that I have used solid walnut strips at every corner of my underlying structure, with the idea of having them show ever so slightly when the corner is rounded, giving the impression of a solid block with smooth corners. On my test samples, I cannot get rid of the tiny blond-colored line (of the paper) that results once I take my corner to its desired radius. It seems as though I may need to be using raw veneer, although I like the size and consistency of the ready-to-go sheets. Any suggestions?
Answer:
The paper edge is just something you have to live with. To our knowledge there is no way to avoid seeing this edge. If the veneer is ultimately getting stain, then this edge will be less conspicuous as it does take stain. You could possibly go over this line with a fine, dark touch up pen but this would be tedious. Otherwise it’s something you have to live with. [2006]
