Genuine Koa Wood Veneer

Koa wood (Acacia koa) is a legendary species that belongs to the Acacia family. Deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture, it was historically known as "Koa-ka" (the valiant soldier) and used to craft outrigger canoes, spear handles, and the original surfboards of the Hawaiian islands. Today, this "Hawaiian Mahogany" is a prized Hawaiian Koa product used for high-end cabinetry, fine furniture, and musical instruments like ukuleles due to its incredible tonal properties.

Origin and Rarity

Koa trees only grow on the islands of Hawaii. While it is a fast-growing species that can be found across the islands, the finest timber for Koa lumber and veneer comes from the higher elevations. Because this species is endemic to only one place in the world, it can be difficult to source. The natural Koa grow cycle also faces unique challenges from animal depredation, specifically wild pigs that forage on young trees.

Appearance and Luster

Koa wood veneer is celebrated for its medium golden to reddish-brown color and its distinctive wavy or curly grain. When finished, it displays an unusual, shimmering luster that is nearly impossible to replicate with other species. While it shares a similar appearance to Teak, it does not contain the natural oils that make Teak suitable for outdoor use.
