Veneering Drums

Oct 28th 2015

Question:

Hey, I would like to apply a veneer to a round object, namely, a drum. How should I apply the veneer (glue type, application type, etc.), and would both the 10-mil and 22-mil paperbacked veneer from Oakwood work for my purpose?

Answer:

I assume you’re talking about a raw drum shell without anything on it right now. Based on that, there are two methods that might work for you. The first would be using BFV and contact cement. Because you get an instant contact bond with contact cement this method doesn’t require any clamps, only lots of elbow grease to make the proper contact bond.

The other method allows you to use 10 mil veneer, regular PVA wood glue and a standard household iron. Again, this method doesn’t require clamping which seems to be the major problem with drum shells. Both of these methods are described in detail on the Oakwood Veneer website in User Tips. You should look these methods over and decide what works best for you.
