Veneering over painted kitchen cabinets

Question:

Can I veneer over my painted kitchen cabinets? If so, how much prep work do I need to do? I need all new cabinet doors, so how do I order these to match whatever veneer I choose?

Answer:

You can veneer over a painted surface as long as the painted surface is still intact and not flaking, peeling or loose in any spots. The veneer will only adhere as well as the surface it is attached to.

The best product to use in this case is the peel and stick veneer which is used successfully by many professional cabinet re-facers. Surface prep only requires that the surface be cleaned of any grease or dirt residue and lighlty scuffed with medium sandpaper to give the adhesive a better bond than it would if stuck to a shiny or glossy surface.

There’s no good way to match your new cabinet doors with veneer on the base cabinets. Colors and grain patterns vary from tree to tree even with woods of the same species. Probably the best you can do is order your doors first then allow us to match the veneer as best we can. Even with our huge selection of in stock veneers, the match won’t be perfect no matter how hard we try.
